Scientific Name
Ara ararauna
Habitat
The Blue-and-yellow Macaw is typically found in forested areas of South America but this exotic bird has found its way into the homes of multitudes of people across the globe who find themselves vexed by their colourful personalities and feathery good looks.
Life Expectancy
Much like their monogamous tendency of mating for life to a single partner, you can expect to stay friends with a Blue-and-yellow macaw for 25 to 10 years on average and there are even reports of one particular feathery survivor who stuck around for 112 years! They usually live longer in captivity as they are not threatened by natural predators like snakes and eagles.
Appearance
With a golden belly, wide blue wings and the facial texture of an African zebra, the Blue-and-yellow macaw makes for a beautiful pet.
Personality
These loud and boisterous characters fit in well when you have a home with a fair amount of space as they are quite an intelligent, chatty species that are able to vocalise very effectively. An owner who is dedicated to looking after this exotic pet and keeps themselves informed about their temperaments can be rewarded greatly by keeping one of these birds in the home. Although the Blue-and-yellow macaw is a potentially wonderful addition to the family, it may be difficult to convince them not to constantly utilise their brilliant voices. If you have an apartment or small children, this pet may not be the best choice for you.
Exercise
The Blue-and-yellow macaw is a very active bird, and requires at least 2-3 hours of exercise outside of a cage every day. As quite a powerful bird, ensure that the toys you provide are strong enough to withstand their rough playful nature.
Intelligence
As quite an intelligent talking bird, this socialite is able to develop a deep bond with its owner and is capable of learning a number of tricks once they feel that they can trust their owner.
Nutrition
This bird requires a diet of fruit, nuts, seeds and a daily dose of quality pellets whilst avoiding high fat foods in order to maintain a healthy and balanced diet.
Health Check
A regular bi-annual health check is recommended for the Blue-and-yellow macaw. Having a check-up close to breeding season as well as one near the moulting season is essential for maintaining good health. For the moulting check, the best time to have the check-up done is when you notice the first signs of your pet moulting.
Is this pet right for you?
If you have a large space and are looking for a beautiful new addition to the family who will talk your ear off, the Blue-and-yellow macaw may just be the right pet for you. They truly are a gorgeous species and if you can handle their loud, boisterous temperament over your long association, you will enjoy an exhilarating, rewarding friendship.
